I’m an 18-year-old boy. My face is full of pimples and there’s a lot of acne on my back that’s quite painful. Also, I have dandruff and an itchy scalp. I’ve tried all possible natural remedies. Please suggest some treatments.

Acne is not limited to the oily T-zone. It can show up anywhere at any time. Stress and hormones can also induce acne. Acne develops in areas where sebaceous glands are present in large numbers like the face, scalp, neck, chest, back, upper arms and shoulders.

Here are some do’s and don’ts for healthy skin :

• Use cleansers containing salicylic acid as these help remove surface oils and unclog pores.

• Treat your face and back to peels for cleaning pores.

• Avoid rough scrubbing and massage, which can stimulate glands and spread the acne.

• Use a fresh towel daily to avoid bacteria that can grow in damp fabric.

• Stop touching your face to avoid spreading the bacteria that cause acne.

• Don’t pick or squeeze pimples. This can spread infection, delay healing and cause long-term scarring.

• Don’t give up too soon. Give therapies at least six weeks to kick in.

• Don’t overdo topical acne medication — use only a thin layer. They can dry out your skin.

Dandruff can be present in dry or oily scalps. The key to controlling dandruff is to switch to a gentler product which may reduce if your scalp is reacting to a harsh ingredient in your shampoo.

Use a clarifying shampoo to reduce product build-up and clear the scalp of flakes.
