With high-rise chairs and a sit-down area, the 30-seater bakery has a simple, modern look and feel to it.

What: King’s Bakery
Where: Rosedale Plaza, Action Area III, New Town
Timings: 10am to 10.30pm
Meal for two: Rs 550-plus

There’s a lot more to Korean food than kimchi and you can experience some of that goodness at the first Korean bakery in town — King’s Bakery.

Serving traditional Korean dishes and confectioneries, the New Town bakery is run by a Korean couple who had a similar business in Seoul in South Korea. Everything on the menu is worth a try — Bibimbap to Korean breads and coffee.

Seok Jung, 42, manages the place and his wife Sojin Lee is the one behind the lip-smacking dishes. The couple and their kids — (from left) Eunji, Jinhee and Jinho — shifted to India because Jung  “wanted his children to get good education”. The family stays in New Town and has made Calcutta their home for the past three years. We learnt how to say ‘hello’ in Korean from them — annyeonghaseyo!

WHAT WE LOVED

Korean Noodles
A Korean take on the Japanese ramen, this wholesome meal is made with onion, spring onions, egg and Korean noodles. The light broth and the mild spicy flavour of the noodles make it a lunch-time pick.
 Rs 250
Mini Choux
This fluffy and light choux pastry is loaded with cream and custard, and melts in your mouth. We bet you can’t stop at one!
Rs 120 for five pieces and Rs 230 for 10.
Custard Cream
Often the most simple-looking dish tastes the most amazing. The Custard Cream is just that. With the right amount of sweetness, this velvety bun with a creamy custard filling will go well with a cup of coffee. Rs 80

SWEET EATS, SAVOURIES AND SIPS

(From left) Be it Sweet Red Bean (with Korean red bean paste as filling), Twisted Doughnut or the traditional Soboro bread with peanut topping — the bakery menu is undoubtedly the highlight here.

There are a few delish ones — traditional Korean dishes like Bibimbap, Kimchi Triangle Gimbap and Chicken Triangle Gimbap.

Bibimbap is made with grilled onion, carrot, cabbage, egg, crab meat, sticky rice, sesame seed and Gochujang, a sweet and spicy fermented sauce. Rs 320
Triangle Gimbap is made with sticky rice, kimchi (a Korean staple made with fermented veggies) or chicken, nori sheet (dry seaweed) and Korean oil. Don’t forget to ask the right way to eat the Gimbap. Rs 120
