Calcutta, Jan. 13: Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car maker, plans to set up a logistics hub in Bengal. The company is looking to invest Rs 80 crore in the project.

The facility will come up on 35 acres at Kanchan Janga Integrated Park — a joint venture between the WBIIDC and Shristi Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd — in Siliguri. The West Bengal Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBIIDC) has a 26 per cent stake in the park, while Shristi owns the remaining 74 per cent.

Officials from Maruti Suzuki and Shristi met state industries and commerce minister Partha Chatterjee today at the Bengal Leads summit.

After the meeting, R. Dayal, executive director (production and engineering) of Maruti Suzuki, said the logistics hub would help the company to store cars and provide servicing facility.

The hub will also provide Maruti a better access to the markets in the Northeast, besides Jharkand and Odisha.

The hub is likely to have a capacity of 4,000 cars and will provide employment to over 100 people. The company has expressed interest to set up another hub at Panagarh.

The state government has asked the company to provide a detailed report and provide instances where the company has set up similar facilities.

Gautam Malik, CEO of Kanchan Janga Integrated Infrastructure Development Ltd, told The Telegraph that land had already been identified for Maruti at the park and only the paperwork was left to be done.
