Calcutta: Lamborghini sold 28 vehicles in India in 2017, garnering a 40 per cent market share in the super sports car segment.

The segment hit the slow lane last year because of demonetisation and the implementation of the GST.

The company recently launched the SUV Urus in India. Sharad Agarwal, the head of Lamborghini India, who was in the city to showcase the Urus, said the new SUV will help the company triple its volumes in India by 2019.

Priced at Rs 3 crore, the Urus is the most affordable Lamborghini.

The Urus will be competing with the Porsche Cayenne, the Mercedes G-Class and the Bentley Bentayga.

Lamborghini will also be ramping up its production facility at Sant'Agata, Italy, in 2018, doubling the factory size to 1,60,000 square metres from 80,000 square metres.

"For this ramp-up, production will be hampered for a few months in 2018. But by 2019, there should be full availability of the vehicle," said Agarwal.

The company plans to double its volumes and achieve sales of 7,000 units by 2019 when Urus will be in full production. In 2016, it sold 3,457 cars.

Underlining the fact that the Urus was launched in India a little over a month since its global launch on December 4, Agarwal said: "In India, given the preference for SUVs, Urus will help us triple our volume by 2019. When a new third model was being conceptualised, India had a role to play. Factors from the Indian market were duly considered with its different set of challenges."
