Mumbai, Aug 30 :
Godrej Soaps Ltd has brought the Ezee liquid detergent brand back into its fold along with the acquisition of Trilo and Key detergent brands from Cussons India Pvt Ltd. Godrej has acquired rights to the three brands for India, Benelux and Iran.
Godrej also announced that it will manufacture, sell and distribute the Imperial Leather soap and talcum powder, a brand owned by Cussons. However, Cussons will be responsible for marketing the brand. Godrej officials did not divulge the compensation involved in the whole process.
Godrej Soaps managing director Adi Godrej, in a statement here today, said, ?The acquisition is part of our aggressive growth strategy that involves becoming a serious player in the detergents market in India and exploring opportunities abroad.?
Commenting on the deal, James Getley, country manager, Cussons India, said, ?Cussons purchased Ezee last year in order to help strengthen the distribution of Imperial Leather. With Godrej agreeing to distribute our flagship brand, we no longer need this support and it makes sense to focus our efforts on Imperial Leather which is at the heart of the Cussons group??.
While the acquisition of Ezee will make Godrej the dominant player in the market for liquid detergents, Trilo and Key brands have great potential in the rural markets.
Godrej had launched Ezee in 1983. The brand was transferred to Procter & Gamble India in 1993 as part of a joint venture between Godrej and P&G. The brand was then acquired by Cussons India from P&G in 1998, which has now sold the brand back to Godrej Soaps.
At present, Godrej?s sole representation in the detergents sector is the liquid detergent Dip which has a market share of 15 per cent.
