Calcutta, April 8: Elgin Hotels & Resorts, owner of the eponymous chain of heritage properties in north Bengal and Sikkim, has decided to come up with a boutique property in Calcutta.

The company has chalked out a plan to buy an old house in the central part of the city and convert it into a hotel, Viraj Oberoi, director of Elgin Hotels, said.

"We will come up with a 35-40 room boutique hotel, completing the circuit of four properties in the Himalayas. Overseas travellers who visit those hotels will now get a similar experience in Calcutta," he added.

The company intends to spend Rs 30 crore in acquiring the Calcutta property, which would be an old-styled zamindar house, and turn it into a hotel. Oberoi said the company would unveil its plan after the Pujas.

The existing units are located in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok and Pelling. The company earns an average room rent of Rs 8,000 a day, even as the Darjeeling property fetches a higher amount.

The Lama Road property in Darjeeling, where Elgin is adding 15 rooms, once used to be the summer house of the Maharaja of Cooch Behar.
