Two Coal India subsidiaries critical to the production of the public sector miner has seen double-digit growth in December, recovering from the earlier slump caused by the monsoon and shutdowns.

South Eastern Coalfields Ltd produced 13.93 million tonnes (mt) in December, a growth of 11.3 per cent over the corresponding month of the previous year.

Coal India officials said the Dipka open cast mine, which was flooded in September, is back on track producing 85,000 tonnes per day with plans to increase production to 1 lakh tonnes per day.

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd produced 14.36mt in December — its highest production being 6.97 lakh tonnes in a single day on December 30.

Production was affected earlier in the year on account of intermittent shutdowns and law and order problem.

“The company has regained production tempo from October onwards,” a Coal India official said.
