Calcutta: Genpact, the global professional services firm, has finally embarked on its expansion plan in Bengal.
The New York Stock Exchange-listed company has joined hands with Simplex Infra Technopark LLP, part of the Simplex Infra group, to jointly develop a G+25 commercial building for the IT and ITES sector at Sector V, Salt Lake.
Genpact, which started its operations in Calcutta in 2004-05 with an employee strength of 300, has since hired over 3,000 people now working out of the Candor IT Special Economic Zone in New Town, Rajarhat. The company was allotted 1.5 acres of land at Sector V in 2006-07 during the tenure of the earlier Left Front government for further expansion. The project is now being undertaken without any SEZ tax incentives.
Called Imagine Tech Park, the project entails an investment of around Rs 200 crore and is expected to be completed by 2021. Genpact, which is providing land, is the anchor investor in the project.
"Calcutta has been an integral part of our growth strategy and has seen terrific growth over the past few years. This expansion is our commitment to the state and the city," said Piyush Mehta, chief human resource officer of Genpact, at the groundbreaking event of the project on Thursday.
"Calcutta is a hub of financial and accounting solutions and some of our major clients, especially in the heavy manufacturing sector, aviation among others are being serviced from here. This new centre will help in future expansion of the company," said Vidya Srinivasan, senior vice-president, global infrastructure and IT leader, Genpact.
For the Simplex group, this is their first major project in IT/ITES space and the company would explore more commercial projects in the sector .
