Patna: Reputable ophthalmologists came out with videos on eye-related surgeries at Patna Ophthalmic Film Festival organised by Raj Retina and Eye Care Centre under the aegis of Patna Ophthalmological Society at a city hotel on Sunday.

The ophthalmologists showed videos of cataract surgery and how intraocular lens was a breakthrough in vision surgery, which enables cataract patients to leave their glasses.

Videos on oculoplasty surgery to correct squint (condition of divergence of eye) problem were also shown apart from videos on cornea and refractive surgery, glaucoma management among others. A total of 40 short videos were shown during the programme in which over 100 ophthalmologists participated.

For young ophthalmologists, a demonstration on how to inject drugs in the vitreous chamber of the eye was also organised in which Pooja Sinha, Shalabh Sinha, Abhishek Anand and Santosh Krishna demonstrated on dummy eyes.

Delhi-based doctors Manisha, Bhupesh, Bangalore-based Santhan Gopal and Allahabad-based Manish demonstrated the new techniques of eye surgeries on the occasion.

Chairman of Raj Retina and Eye Care Centre, Rajvardhan Azad, said most of the eye-related problems these days were results of defects in the retina.

"The retina is a very sensitive part of the eye. Retinal disorder can affect vision and can be serious enough to cause blindness in some cases," he said.

Chairing a session on glaucoma, director of Sanjeevani Eye Hospital and Research Institute Sunil Kumar Singh said glaucoma was a disease in which early diagnosis and management was pivotal.

"This is because vision lost to the disease doesn't return. Patients with high-risk of glaucoma, that is, patients with hypertension, diabetes and with a history of trauma and myopia, family history of glaucoma should get their eye checked at regular intervals," said Sunil.

Abhishek Anand, another doctor from Patna, spoke on the retinal detachment - how retina separates from the underneath layer.

"Retinal detachment separates the retinal cells from the layers of blood vessels that provide oxygen and nourishment. Retinal detachment for a longer period can cause permanent blindness," said Abhishek.

President of All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) Santhan Gopal said AIOS was supporting post-graduation programme in the state. President of Patna Ophthalmological Society (POS) Pranav Ranjan and secretary of POS Sunil Parmar were among the dignitaries present on the occasion.
