Patna, Jan. 8: Patna College, which will turn 150 tomorrow, could soon have a postal stamp to commemorate its glorious past.
Sources said besides a number of events that have been lined up to celebrate the sesquicentenary, Patna University (PU) has decided to request the postal department to launch a stamp on the college, one of the oldest institutions in east India.
Shambhu Nath Singh, vice-chancellor, PU, said: “We will request the postal department to release a stamp commemorating the glorious past of the college, one of the oldest in the country.”
If the postal department agrees to the varsity’s proposal, Patna College will be the first educational institution in Bihar to have a stamp in its name.
That apart, a number of other events, beginning tomorrow, will be organised to mark the glorious history of the college.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar will be the chief guest and Assembly speaker Uday Narain Choudhary, the guest of honour at the function tomorrow.
This is just the beginning though. On January 20, a special meeting of the Legislative Council would be held on the college campus.
Later in the year, the college will renew the Russell Memorial Lecture. The famous event, named after a former principal of the college, was stopped in the 1970s because of lack of funds.
Sources said quizzes, debates and seminars would also be organised round the year. The college is also planning to invite Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, former president APJ Abdul Kalam and famous Hindi author and critic Namvar Singh to take part in the celebrations.
