The Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, will launch a mobile app to help farmers.

Ajay Kumar Singh, the vice chancellor of BAU, Sabour, said: "The app, which will be called BAU, will transfer scientific suggestions, remedies and other information to tillers. Suppose a farmer has any problem related to agriculture or farming, this app will help him take appropriate measures to counter the problem," he said on Saturday.

He said the varsity has launched an outdoor broadcasting system.

"Now, we have to make more farmers beneficiaries of the technology. The basic thing is to attach farmers' fields to our studio at the varsity though Krishi Vigyan Kendra video-conferencing. A farmer will be able to narrate his problem from his field, and here at the studio, the scientists and experts will be able to guide them with suggestions."

Singh added: "The varsity will start providing SD cards to the farmers. The farmers will be able to access the SD cards to know of the various success stories from farmers besides basic information about agriculture and farming. We plan to reach more farmers through the varsity WhatsApp number (7004528893)."

An SD card (secure digital card) is a small flash memory card used in many small portable devices such as digital video camcorders, digital cameras, handheld computers, audio players and mobile phones.

The vice-chancellor told The Telegraph: "An elaborate action plan has been drafted in the larger interest of farmers. For countering the adverse effect of weather and climatic conditions on agriculture, a blue print of a project worth Rs 225 crore has been prepared and forwarded to the state government for approval. We have a target to start work on it in 2017."

He also talked about experiments in the sphere of nanoscience and nanotechnology to help agricultural development.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering.

Singh said the varsity has developed super-absorbent hydrogels, multi-nutrient nano clay polymer, iron and zinc nano fertilisers, nano silver and nano fertilisers. "We have already started the process to patent our nano products. All nano products are very important for agriculture," Singh said.

He said construction work would be accelerated in 2017 for the proposed forestry college affiliated to BAU.
