Colleges affiliated to Patna University (PU) would teem with urban students from this session, if results declared for admission to undergraduate courses are anything to go by.

The results are a clear indication that students of Class XII from Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education — mostly based in urban areas of the state — have elbowed out their counterparts from the Bihar School Examination Board.

Randhir Kumar Singh, the admission in-charge of Patna College, said: “The test comprised general knowledge and mental aptitude. Urban students have more exposure to current affairs owing to newspapers and Internet.”

Akansha Morurka, who has topped the entrance test for admission to Vanijya Mahavidyalaya with 79 marks, is a student of St Joseph’s Convent, a CBSE affiliated school.

PU vice-chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh said: “The entrance tests were introduced because it is often seen that some students who had fared well in their Plus Two lagged in graduation. On the other hand, some students who did well in college did not have very excellent marks in their Intermediate examination. We wanted to screen the students through the entrance test.”

Saloni Kumari, who secured 72 per cent in CBSE board exam from Kendriya Vidyalaya Danapur and has cleared the test for Magadh Mahila College, said: “The entrance test gives a second chance to students who have secured less marks in Class XII. Earlier, poor marks meant end of the road.”

Shruti Suman, who secured 91 per cent in her board exam from Ishan International Girl’s School (CBSE) and has taken admission to Patna Science College, said: “The test screens students for the second time.”
