The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna would train autorickshaw drivers on how to handle road traffic victims.

The health hub would put up two stalls at Destination Bihar, the six-day expo to be organised by Bihar Industries Association, in which doctors and students of AIIMS Patna would train the autorickshaw drivers. The expo would start from Saturday.

“We want to make the autorickshaw drivers the first respondents of traffic accidents. It is often seen that the victims of road accidents are ignored by passers by. Police don’t have much idea on how to handle such situations. Therefore, if the autorickshaw drivers are properly trained, they can help the victims immediately,” said Sanjeev Kumar, a doctor of the Cardiothoracic department of AIIMS-Patna. According to AIIMS-Patna officials, around 1 lakh autorickshaws ply on the city roads and training them would help the road traffic victims.

Sanjeev said: “We would train the autorickshaw drivers on how to take care of the airways, bleeding and neck of the victim. There is a risk of neck fracture in a road accident.”

The autorickshaw drivers would also be provided with a sticker at the end of the training. “After the training, we would take a written test of the drivers. Those who would pass the test would be given the stickers bearing the AIIMS-Patna logo and the name of the driver. Sankat Sanketak would be written on the sticker which is a proof that the particular driver is able to take care of the road traffic victims.”
