Police on Monday questioned a teacher of a reputable city school over the disappearance of a student from the institution two days ago but failed to get any clues on the girl's whereabouts.

Secretariat deputy superintendent Shibhli Nomani said the teacher was interrogated by a team headed by Shastri Nagar police station house officer Ramesh Kumar Singh. Nothing substantial was unearthed during the hour-long questioning, he added.

Nomani, under whose jurisdiction the school falls, said he was personally monitoring the police operation. He added: "Another teacher of the school would also be quizzed in a day or two."

The family of the 17-year-old Class XII student - the school is claiming she was struck off the rolls for failing to clear the Class XI exams - claimed the police lodged a missing case on Saturday even though the girl's father feared she had been kidnapped.

An investigating officer said: "We are probing the case. Once it is confirmed that she has been kidnapped, a kidnapping case will be registered."

Initial investigations have revealed the girl had gone to the school on Saturday with her father to collect her admit card for the CBSE Class XII exam (that started on Monday). The girl had not paid her tuition fees for the last year and the father-daughter duo were carrying Rs 65,000 to deposit to the school.

The girl asked her father, a businessman, to wait downstairs and went inside the school. Her father told the police: "She came downstairs and handed over the bag with the money to me. Again, she went upstairs to talk to her teachers. The second time she didn't return. Her mobile phone was also switched off."

When she didn't return three hours laterby when it was 12.30pm, the father informed at home. The girl's mother rushed to the school with other family members to meet the principal but failed. They raised a hue and cry over the girl's disappearance and demanded immediate arrest of the two teachers currently on the radar of the police.

The father of the girl said: "We were not allowed to meet the principal despite repeated attempts. Finally, we reported the matter to the police who visited the school premises. But nothing has happened in the case even after two days."

The family has claimed the girl was regular to school but the school authorities claimed her name was deleted from the rolls after the Class XI exams.

A police officer said: "If she did not clear her Class XI exam, the question of her coming to school on a regular basis doesn't arise."

The police have also obtained the girl's cellphone call records and are speaking to her friends for a clue on where she might be.
