Two back-to-back incidents of gangrape in Arwal district have prompted the police headquarters to direct superintendents of police to put cases of crimes against women on speedy trial.
A 23-year-old married woman was allegedly raped in an area under the jurisdiction of Kinjer police station on Monday night.
Arwal superintendent of police (SP) Anand Kumar Singh said the victim reached Kinjer autorickshaw stand around 6pm after an altercation with her in-laws, who were not happy with her frequent visits to her parents’ house. She waited at the stand till 9pm. On finding her alone, two drivers — Shiv Kumar Chandrawanshi and Upendra — offered help.
The drivers took the woman to a deserted place on Kinjer-Kurtha road in a four-wheeler and raped her. Then, they were taking her in the same vehicle towards Manikpur Kothia village to drop her. On seeing a group of residents, the woman raised an alarm.
SP Singh said one of the two drivers — Chandrawanshi — was arrested and produced before the chief judicial magistrate in Jehanabad on Wednesday. The court forwarded the Kinjer resident to Jehabanad divisional jail for 14 days.
He said: “The victim’s husband work for a private firm in Surat. She was examined at Jehanabad Sadar Hospital. Her statement was recorded in the Jehanabad court under Section 164 of CrPC,” the SP said.
Arwal does not have a court or jail.
Two persons — Pramod Kumar and Lalbabu Yadav — have been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl from the minority community at Nanaur-Sahar village. SP Singh said three other accused, who had raped the girl at a village fair, would also be arrested soon. “We shall file the chargesheet soon,” he added.
Deputy inspector-general (Magadh range) Nayyar Hasnain Khan said he has issued directives to the Arwal SP to put both the cases on speedy trial and ensure that the accused are punished soon.
