Education minister Ashok Choudhary on Thursday stressed on the need to curb unfair means in examinations.

He shared his views during a programme organised by the Bihar School Examination Board to felicitate top performers in Matriculation and Intermediate examinations 2015. Choudhary spoke about a picture showing use of unfair means at an examination centre in Vaishali district this year, which had gone viral. “The incident raised a question on the quality of education,” he said and directed the board officials to ensure fair examinations.

The Matriculation examination of the current academic session will start on March 12  next year and the Intermediate exam on February 24.

Ruppi Kumari, a student of MPD Mahila College, Sitamarhi, who has secured second position in Intermediate (arts) and was felicitated, said: “What the minister said is correct. The state government should be strict in checking the use of unfair means. At the same time, steps should be taken to improve the school education system.”

The education department also honoured 10 districts for conducting fair Matriculation and Intermediate examinations. Madhubani district received first position in this category followed by West Champaran, Katihar, Patna and others. Every year, the education department felicitates Matriculation and Intermediate toppers. This year, 30 students of Simultala Awasiya Vidyalaya figured among the top 10 in the Matriculation examinations, the results of which were declared on June 20. Niraj Ranjan of Simultala Awasiya Vidyalaya topped the matric exam, while 29 of his classmates figured in the top 10.

Kumar Aryabhatta, one of the toppers who secured ninth position in the Matriculation examination, said: “Our school can be a model for other government schools in the state in terms of providing quality education.” The education department also felicitated Intermediate toppers with Sadma Khanam of CABS College, Begusarai, receiving the gold medal followed by Ruppi Kumar of MPD College, Sitamarhi.

Twenty-six students from arts, science, and commerce were felicitated on the occasion. Thirty-eight institutes were awarded best schools in respective districts based on their overall performance. Each student was presented with a certificate, a laptop and books.
