Patna, July 16: At least six of the 16 Amarnath yatra pilgrims who died on Sunday when their bus skidded off the Jammu-Srinagar highway were from Bihar.

The deceased have been identified as Danapur residents Dilip Kumar, Meena Devi, Rahul Kumar, Rohit Kumar, Pawan Kumar and Sagar Kumar.

Chhaya Devi (45), a resident of Simri Bakhtiyarpur in Saharsa district, is missing. Two of Chhaya's relatives - Vijay Chaurasia (52) and his son Anshu, also known as Rajat Chaurasia (25), are undergoing treatment in a Jammu hospital. They are among the 27 people injured in the accident in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, the second tragedy to hit the Amarnath pilgrimage this year.

Rahul Kumar, Chaurasia's other son, told The Telegraph from Saharsa that they had gone to Jammu by the Amarnath Express from Khagaria on July 13. Anshu informed the family over phone that they had suffered injuries in the accident.

There are at least four more injured from Bihar.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar condoled the death of the pilgrims and wished speedy recovery for the injured. Later in the night, Patna district magistrate Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said Nitish has announced Rs 4 lakh ex gratia to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured pilgrims from Bihar, from the chief minister's relief fund.
