Muzaffarpur, Dec. 14: The Opposition led by Abdul Bari Siddiqui staged a dharna in front of district magistrate (DM) Anand Kishore’s office protesting the deteriorating law and order situation in the area.

The demonstration came in the wake of the murder of 32-year-old Rohit Kumar last night and the abduction of two businessmen from the city.

Ajay Kushwaha and Deepak Kumar, dealing in plywood and textile goods, were abducted from Ahiyapur police station last week. Even before the case could be solved, Kumar’s murder in Kalambagh area under Kazi Mohammadpur police station last night has frightened people here.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sunil Kumar said the gangs involved behind the abduction of plywood merchant Ajay Kushwaha and cloth merchant Deepak Kumar have been identified.

The SSP hinted that the police investigation was headed in a proper direction and teams were constantly conducting raids on the India-Nepal border for early rescue of the kidnapped traders.

The district police have got vital clues from a notorious fugitive of north Bihar, Mojelal Sahni, who is at present lodged in Motihari jail in connection with murder, abduction and extortion cases. Additional direction-general of police (DIG) (law and order) P.N. Rai, accompanied by deputy inspector-general of crime investigation department (CID) Umesh Kumar, visited Muzaffarpur to review the pace of police probe in the case.

They held closed-room parleys with DIG (Tirhut), Pankaj Darad, SSP Sunil Kumar, SP City, A.K. Singh and other police officials and gave necessary instructions to the raiding team.

Siddiqui, accompanied by the state president of RJD traders’ cell, Ram Chandra Prasad, met the family members of the kidnapped traders today and expre- ssed serious concern over the worsening law and order condition.

The RJD district president, Mithlesh Yadav, handed over a memorandum to the DM, seeking the immediate intervention of the governor and the chief minister in liberating the abducted traders.

Talking to reporters, Siddiqui demanded an immediate rescue of the businessmen, adding that the RJD would launch an agitation against the misrule of the NDA government and its failure to improve the law and order machinery.
