Bhagalpur, July 25: The residents of Anandpur village under Lakshmipur block of Jamui district are spending sleepless nights since Maoists kidnapped a youth and fired at his father last Saturday after failing to zero in on a suspected police informer.

R.N. Singh, the Jamui superintendent of police, said more than 50 armed Maoists raided Anandpur village and fired indiscriminately at the house of Lakshmi Yadav, whom the Naxalites suspected to be a police informer. Lakshmi managed to escape but his neighbour, Govind Yadav, 52, sustained bullet injuries. The members of the banned outfit also abducted Govind’s son, Tuntun Yadav, 20.

“Lakshmi somehow managed to escape but his neighbour, Gobind, sustained three bullet injuries. The rebels then abducted Gobind’s son Tuntun and escaped towards Kairwar forest,” added Singh.

In 2009, the rebels had abducted Lakshmi’s son Bibhuti Kumar. The police still have no clue about his whereabouts.

Over the past month, Maoists have increased their activities in the districts of eastern Bihar. Despite several police operations against the rebels and subsequent arrest of some top leaders of the organisation, the Naxalites have started to target the rural areas in the region.

Sources said the lack of government action and concrete steps to oppose the outfit has helped the organisation regain its foothold in the region.

Singh said Maoists murdered one Naresh Yadav, a resident of Thumhan village, near Bicchagar village under Charkapatthar police station, on the same night.
