Patna: Teaching and non-teaching employees of Patna University staged a massive protest on the varsity campus on Tuesday, demanding that the state government implement the seventh Central Pay Commission's recommendations on pay packages for varsity staff.
Academic and administrative work at Patna University was paralysed from 1 pm as teachers and non-teaching staff boycotted work.
A large number of teachers and non-teaching staff assembled at the Wheeler Senate Hall campus and raised slogans against the university and the state government.
"The Union and state governments have implemented the seventh pay commission package for employees. State government employees are even getting the salaries as per the new pay commission recommendations. But university teachers have been left out as the state government has not implemented the commission recommendations for teachers," said Randhir Kumar Singh, president, Patna University Teachers Association.
The Union cabinet in October last year gave its approval for revision of pay scales for about 8 lakh teachers under the purview of the University Grants Commission (UGC) following the recommendations of the seventh Central Pay Commission report.
Sources said that under the revised payscale the salary hike is in the range of 22 to 28 percent.
Though the Patna University Teachers Association has been demanding salary hike as per the seventh pay commission report, the All India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (Aifucto) has alleged discrepancies in the commission recommendations.
The Aifucto members alleged that the Union government was to bear 80 per cent of the expenses incurred due to implementation of the seventh pay commission recommendations for a period of 51 months. But, as per the commission recommendations announced last month, the Centre's share has been reduced to 50 per cent and the time has been reduced to 39 months.
The agitating teachers and non-teaching staff of the varsity also met Patna University vice-chancellor Rash Bihari Prasad Singh and submitted a memorandum to him.
The VC assured the agitating teaching and non-teaching staff that he would request the state government to introduce the seventh pay commission packages for them.
The teachers were also against state government decision of payment of their salaries through the treasury.
