Bhagalpur, May 30: The 10-day long power crisis has all of a sudden woken up the local public representatives in Bhagalpur.

Different political parties, in the wake of the poor power supply, came out in the streets and protested against the authorities for not restoring the power supply.

Public representatives visited the site at Ekchari, where on May 21, a high-tension overhead wire tower had fallen after a thunderstorm.

Congress workers under the leadership of senior party leader, Ajit Sharma today barged into the office of K.N. Singh, general manager, Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), Bhagalpur circle. Singh along with other employees of the office, however, managed to escape.

The party workers in the absence of the general manager, garlanded a dummy statue of the officer with electric bulbs and tubes. The partymen along with local people also staged a dharna in front of the BSEB for hours.

“We went there to give a memorandum to the general manager but he left the place before we could reach. We want the ongoing repairing work should be done with speed at Ekchari,” Sharma told The Telegraph.

“We are ready to cooperate with the department if required. A team of Congress workers would visit Ekchari on June 1 and we would provide Kar Sava. If required we would provide additional labourers so that the repair work is completed soon,” he added.

Leader of the Opposition Abdul Bari Siddiqui, who had toured Bhagalpur on May 29, also visited Ekchari and inspected the repairing work there. Talking to reporters, Siddiqui expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work and lambasted the state government for playing with the sentiments of the people of the state.

He called upon the people to make the RJD-sponsored Bhagalpur bandh a success. RJD workers, who are preparing to make tomorrow’s bandh a success, today organised street plays and meetings in different parts of the city.

State health minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey and local BJP MLAs late last night visited Ekchari and inspected the ongoing repairing work. Choubey expressed serious concern over the slow work progress. “There was no proper light there and the workers had to face difficulties in the dark. I instructed the general manager of National Thermal Power Corporation, Kahalgaon to arrange adequate lights at the site. I also instructed him to provide skilled workers to BSEB so that the repair work could be completed in less time,” Choubey said.

Local BJP MP, Shahnawaz Hussain, who is facing severe criticism for his alleged inactiveness in restoring power supply in Bhagalpur, this morning rushed to Ekchari and inspected the repair work. “It is a natural calamity and no one could do anything in it,” he said.
