IGIMS gears up for big weekend

The director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, M.C. Mishra, will hand over degrees and gold medals to students at the second convocation ceremony of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, on Saturday.

The director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, M.C. Mishra, will hand over degrees and gold medals to students at the second convocation ceremony of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, on Saturday.

AIIMS-Patna director G.K Singh will also attend the event. Sixty-five students will receive gold medals while 31 others will receive degree certificates.

The courses were started in 2011 even though the hospital came into being in 1983.

IGIMS will celebrate its foundation day on Friday. According to sources, IGIMS had planned to inaugurate an auditorium, an air-conditioned outpatient wing of the ear, nose and throat department, operation theatre and dental unit among others on Friday but the plan has been postponed after chief minister Nitish Kumar could not confirm his attendance.

IGIMS was planning to its start its kidney transplant unit on Friday as well but is still waiting for the nod of the appellate authority for the unit. The head of AIIMS-Delhi's surgery department, V.Seenu, (whom the health department had asked to check the necessary facilities at IGIMS) visited IGIMS on February 2 and has given a nod for starting the facility.

"The appellate authority has asked for a checklist of the kidney transplant unit. Only after confirming that the necessary items are available will it give the nod," said a source.

Health minister Tej Pratap will be the chief guest at the foundation day ceremony of IGIMS on Friday. He will inaugurate a health exhibition.

Principal secretary, health, R.K. Mahajan will also accompany Pratap at the event.

Sangeeta Pankaj, a teacher in the gynaecology department of IGIMS, said: "Preparations for the convocation day programme are going on in full swing. A cultural programme will be organised in the evening as well."
