Patna: The state police headquarters has proposed to create an inspector-general rank post to ensure proper implementation of traffic rules.

The proposal, submitted to the home department last week, is awaiting chief minister Nitish Kumar's approval. Once he gives his nod, the proposal will be sent for an the state cabinet's approval.

Nitish holds additional charge of the Home portfolio.

Sources in the department said the chief minister was studying the proposal.

The jurisdiction of IG, traffic, would be the entire state.

At present only Patna has a superintendent of police-rank officer to ensure implementation of traffic rules.

"No other district in the state has the privilege," said an IPS officer who had earlier served as traffic SP in Patna.

The IPS officer pointed out that the flow of traffic across the state has increased manifold and so has the number of vehicles.

"The time is not far off when every district will require an additional post of SP, traffic for the district headquarters towns," the officer said.

Rising number of road accidents and traffic jams across the state seems to have compelled the police headquarters to push for the new post of IG, traffic, a source in the police headquarters said.
