The gentleman’s game is anything but restricted to boys, Central University of Bihar showed last Friday and with a flourish.

Five years since its establishment, the university organised a cricket match for the girls last week in Patna.

Registrar Mohammad Nehal inaugurated the match of 20 overs between the teams. There was a lot of excitement as the CUB Sunrisers XI and CUB Batting Divas came out on the pitch.

The Batting Divas won the toss and captain Bhavya Ankita, a third-semester student of environmental sciences, elected to bat first. The team ended at 99/3 after 10 overs.

Avinita Gautam, a first-semester mathematics student, was the top scorer for the Divas with 28 runs. A close second was captain Ankita (27 runs).

Chasing the modest target of 100, CUB Sunrisers fell short by 11 runs. At the loss of two wickets, the team scored 89 runs in 10 overs.

The co-ordinator of the university’s games and sports committee Prashant was happy nonetheless.

“We are happy the match went off successfully. The university has organised chess, carom and badminton matches for the girl students in the past. This year, they expressed their willingness for a cricket match.”

Social change

Continuity and change in the Indian society was up for discussion at the Central University of Bihar on Saturday.

The university’s centre for sociological studies had organised the talk and panel discussion on Indian society in the 21st century: development and change at the Gaya campus.

Question-and-answer sessions followed two panel discussions on Indian society: continuity and change and contemporary issues and challenges in Indian society.

Kaushal Kishore, the academic coordinator on the Gaya campus, chaired the first discussion. Among the speakers were Pranav Kumar, Yogesh Shekhar, Beauty Yadav, Prashant Kumar and Haresh Pandey.

The speakers shared their views on issues such as pluralism, the local and regional culture, language and knowledge creation and spread of consumer culture in the age of globalisation.

Pranav Kumar chaired the second panel where several contemporary issues, including civil society, law and development, tribal life, role of English language in development, indigenous people and their culture, were discussed.

Matter of heritage

National Institute of Technology’s architecture department last week organised a seminar on whether Patna could be a World Heritage City.

Manoj Kumar, the head of department, advocated that Patna be awarded the tag of World Heritage City.

At the event on November 25, Manoj said: “The city has its own historical importance. It is the centre of different religions, be it Jainism or Buddhism. Patan Devi, one of the Shaktipeeths, is also here. Ruins from the Asokan period can be found in the Kumhrar area. All these sites make Patna a suitable candidate for World Heritage City tag.”

Bijay Kumar Das, an associate professor in the architecture department, said the state government should take initiatives to conserve the heritage buildings in Patna. “Conservation work should be carried out in Patna City and the riverfront area where the colonial-era buildings, including Darbhanga House, Patna College, St Peter’s Church and NIT-Patna, are situated,” he summed up.

Off to work

Personality development workshops held at Cimage College bore fruit as the students were recently placed with leading companies.

The college director, Neeraj Agrawal, said at a news meet on November 26: “We had earlier organised workshops where the students were told how to conduct themselves during job interviews and were also given tips on personality development. They sat through mock interviews too. As a result of all these efforts, the students have received good placement offers. Rajnikant Tiwari, one of our bachelor of computer applications students, has been offered the post of assistant branch manager of ICICI Bank, while bachelor of business administration student Namita Mishra has been selected by the All India Information Technology Association.”
