Patna: Security forces destroyed bunkers and seized weapons and explosives from Maoists following an encounter in the Langurahi forest at Aurangabad district, around 130km southwest of here, on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of special task force, Central Reserve Police Force, CoBRA and district police launched an operation at Langurahi and Pachsakhiya forests on Friday. They had information that two self-proclaimed commanders Vivek Yadav and Sanjeet Bhuyian had gathered in the area.
Heavily armed Maoists allegedly attacked the police team as soon as they reached Karuna hills. The forces also fired in self-defence forcing the Maoists to escape.
They had another encounter near Sagrpur village early on Saturday morning.
Aurangabad superintendent of police Satya Prakash said bunkers of the Maoists were destroyed and household items seized from them. One rifle of .315 bore, 21 rounds of ammunition, detonators, injections, police uniform and a number of solar plates were recovered during the operation. At least two dozen cellphones belonging to the activists were also seized from the spot.
The operation concluded on Saturday evening, Satya Prakash said, adding that there was no report of casualty. "The operation will continue as movement of some self-proclaimed Naxalite commanders has been noticed in the region," he told reporters on Saturday.
Additional superintendent of police (operation) Rajesh Kumar Singh said another team of the security force was camping at Madanpur, considered to be a hotbed of the Maoists.
