Patna, March 24: The state government today gave an assurance in the legislative council that it would examine whether or not district magistrates and superintendents of police could be entrusted with the job of directly supervising dowry cases so that quick action could be taken in such sensitive matters.
Replying to Congress member Jyoti who wanted to know from the government about what steps were being taken to abolish the dowry system, social welfare department minister Parveen Amanullah said the district welfare officer has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of the district dowry prohibition officer.
Terming dowry as a social problem, which the government could only tackle, the minister said a massive awareness campaign was required to seek people’s support. Not satisfied with the reply, Jyoti said the evil is prevalent in society on a large scale from which no section is unaffected.
Directing deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, chairman Tarakant Jha said the issue of non-payment of salary of primary teachers have been raised in the House time and again and hence, the government should look into the matter.
