Patna, Jan. 23: Santoor, banjo, sitar, sarod, tabla and har-monium today gave each other a tough fight at Sri Arvind Mahila College during an inter-college folk song competition.
Surprised by the names? These were the names given to six women’s college teams — Patna Women’s College, Magadh Mahila College, RPM College, JD Women’s College, Ganga Devi Mahila College and the host, Sri Arvind Mahila College — taking part in the contest.
Organised by Inter-College Women’s Association, a group of women faculty members, the college teams were given five minutes each for their performances. At the end of one-and-a-half-hour, Patna Women’s College and Magadh Mahila College were declared joint winners with 71 points. While Patna Women’s College team chose the Rajasthani Holiya mein ure re gulal, ayo rang kesario, Magadh Mahila College members sang Rang gaile dhanwa ke bal ho, jhume lage kisanwa.
JD Women’s College and Sri Arvind Mahila College finished second and third with 70 and 69 points respectively. Their choices of songs: Gor sawar badra ke reshmi ghunghatwa se chand jhankela and Khelat ranga gujaria ho madhuban mein.
Asha Tripathi, a member of Inter-College Women’s Association, said: “We thought to name the groups differently as we didn’t want to reveal the identity of the contestants during their performances.”
Soma Chakravarty, the folk dance teacher at Bharatiya Nritya Kala Mandir, and Sheela Choudhary, a retired Maithili teacher at Patna Women’s College, judged the teams’ performances.
