Patna: Easter eggs, cross buns and delectable brownies have been flying off confectionery shelves in Patna as residents get ready to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Sunday.

Sweet Home on Boring Road has made Easter Eggs with kaju-barfi. "Easter eggs are an important part of Easter celebration. We have Easter eggs made with kaju-barfi and filled with chocolates. We also have special Easter eggs made with chocolates and filled with nuts. Since Friday, we have sold around 100 Easter eggs and over 200 pieces of cross buns (a spiced sweet bun made with currants or raisins and marked with a cross on the top)," said a staff-member at the confectionary.

Patna City resident Abhishek Patrick said: "The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates new life. For Christians, the egg is a symbol of Jesus's resurrection for which Easter is celebrated. We celebrate Jesus' resurrection when the Easter eggs are cracked open. Many Christian families here make Easter eggs at home and paint them with homemade dyes. Decorating Easter eggs is a beloved tradition among Christian families although many these days prefer to buy them."

He said Easter was also important as Christians end their 40-day fast.

"Christians do not consume non-vegetarian food for 40 days. On Easter we consume non-vegetarian food and end our fast. So far as my family is concerned, we will have a small get-together with near and dear ones on Easter day," added Abhishek.

Isha Lawrence, 22, who lives in Digha, will prepare special dishes for her family luncheon to celebrate Easter.

"I am ready to display my culinary skills for my family on Easter Sunday. I will make a marzipan cake with a recipe handed over to me by my grandmother. A small egg hunt will also be organised in which colourful eggs would be hidden in the bushes and everyone would have to find the maximum number of eggs to win. The winner will get Easter goodies and edible chocolate eggs," she said.
