Saharsa police on Friday arrested two persons and seized a cellphone and a SIM, which were allegedly used for making extortion calls to Saharsa doctor Brajesh Kumar Singh.

Dr Brajesh had allegedly received threat calls on his cellphone on August 10 this year. The caller had demanded Rs 25 lakh as extortion money, failing which he threatened to blow up the doctor and his family members.

Confirming the arrests, the station house officer (SHO) of Saharsa town police station, Sanjay Kumar Singh, said Santosh Yadav and his associate Kirti Kumar were arrested from Saharsa town during a raid on Thursday night.

Two country-made pistols, a SIM card and a cellphone besides Rs 1.42 lakh were seized from the possession of Santosh and Kirti, who were evading arrest ever since a complaint was lodged with the Town police station on the victim's statement.

During interrogation, the two confessed to the crime and told the interrogators that they had demanded extortion money from around six doctors of the district headquarters town.

"The police seized a diary containing the names and the cellphone numbers of the doctors, who were on the radar of the gang," the SHO said.

The police had earlier nabbed Vishal Singh and Ranjit Ranjan for their alleged involvement in the case. Vishal, a resident of Mahesi in Madhepura, had criminal antecedents and was involved in snatching the service revolver of a police officer.

Till date, four persons have been arrested in the extortion case.

An investigating officer said Dr Brajesh had earlier survived a murderous attack on July 26 when a gang of armed criminals opened fire at his vehicle near a women's college.

The doctors of the town had launched an indefinite agitation to protest the incident.

The agitation was called off on Thursday night after senior police and administrative officials assured to book all the accused in the case at the earliest.
