Relax. Your hard-earned money would no more be drained out through streetlamps glowing in daytime.

After a series of reports in The Telegraph on streetlights burning bright in the daytime, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to plug the loss of taxpayers’ money. It instructed officials in charge of its four administrative circles to deploy dedicated employees to monitor and supervise the streetlights in their jurisdiction.

For the past one week, The Telegraph was steadfast on its mission to plug energy waste and stop loss of taxpayers’ money because of streetlights glowing 24x7 near west Gandhi Maidan in New Capital circle of the PMC for almost a month. Around Rs 1 lakh (Rs 92,170 to be precise) of you and I was drained. But good sense has now prevailed on the civic body. From this Wednesday, electricians would be deployed in each circle to ensure lights remained off in the daytime.

Shashank Shekhar Sinha, the executive officer of the New Capital circle, said the PMC commissioner had instructed him to immediately take the necessary steps to fix the problem (streetlights glowing in the daytime).

“The executive officers of Bankipore, Kankerbagh and Patna City circles have also been asked to monitor the streetlamps in their respective areas. I got the lights switched off on Sunday. From Wednesday, after the government holidays are over, executive order will be issued to deploy electricians to ensure lights are switched off during the daytime,” Sinha said.

A civic body official said as timers of some street lamps were out of order, they glowed throughout the day. They would have to be operated manually till their timers were repaired, said the official.

Patna Electricity Supply Undertaking recently handed the responsibility of maintaining streetlamps to the PMC. But the civic body has not been monitoring them owing to acute resource crunch. The PMC has now floated tenders for the maintenance of streetlights, said mayor Afzal Imam.
