Residents, snuggle into your woollens because the capital would witness another spell of day cold condition this weekend.

Weathermen in Bihar have forecast this year’s first day cold spell will start from Saturday. A western disturbance prevailing over New Delhi and cyclonic circulation along the Odisha coastline are expected to cause cloudy skies over the state, a fall in the maximum temperature by up to 5°C and day cold conditions in Bihar.

Ashish Sen, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna, told The Telegraph on Thursday: “Two western disturbances are prevailing over north India. The one over Jammu and Kashmir is unlikely to reach Bihar but the other prevailing over New Delhi and stretching up to Lucknow is likely to hit Bihar by Saturday. In addition, cyclonic circulation along the Odisha coastline is bringing in moisture to Bihar.”

Residents started feeling the effect of the incoming moisture on Thursday because of the slightly hazy weather. “Clouds would develop over Odisha, Jharkhand and Bengal in the next couple of days and coupled with the western disturbance, Bihar would experience day cold conditions,” added Sen.

When the maximum temperature falls by five to 10 degrees Celsius below the normal temperature and there is shallow cloud or thick fog cover, an area is said to witness day cold conditions. The last day cold spell in Patna started from December 20 and continued till December 29 when the maximum temperature fell by 11°C. It again surged thereafter, with residents taking off their sweaters at home.

In the wake of the fluctuating weather conditions, doctors advised caution. “Human body does not adapt to such rapidly changing temperature. People tend to shed their woollens at the slightest rise in temperature but it should be avoided till the end of January,” said Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, physiology faculty, Patna Medical College and Hospital.
