The next time residents want to improve their strength and flexibility, they could try the TheraBand at a wellness centre in the city.

Endorsed by the American Physical Therapy Association, the TheraBand are resistance bands used for flexing and stretching exercises. Aura Medicare, a wellness centre, has brought the exercise to the residents.

The centre is already offering facilities of yoga and panchkarma (ayurvedic) treatments. The authorities said the facility of TheraBand exercises would be opened next week at the centre on SP Verma Road.

The exercise aims at lending flexibility, correcting posture, improving mobility apart from rehabilitation and joint and spine care.

Santosh Kumar Mishra, director, Aura Medicare, said: “Bands of five colours — yellow, red, green, blue and black — are used in this exercise. The colours indicate the resistance levels of the bands and point at the resistance power of the person doing the exercise. For instance, the yellow band is the least resistant, while the black is the most Normally sportspersons use the blue and black TheraBands to increase their muscle power and flexibility. They are extremely useful to increase mobility in the joints.”

Clients would be provided the bands depending on their muscle power, added the director.

Physiotherapist at the centre, Manoj Kumar Mishra, said the TheraBand is very useful to people suffering from osteoarthritis.

In this case, the resistance band can be tied to the legs and the person is made to walk. He said: “If a person’s rotator cuff is injured and he/she is not able to lift his/her hand or bend backwards, the TheraBand can be very useful to bring back flexibility.”

The physiotherapist added that the resistance band also focuses on individual muscle toning.

The TheraBand exercise at Aura Medicare consists of equipment, including TheraBand complete station with gym balls, stability trainer, loop of five different colours and mat.

The gym balls help in fighting obesity, ensure spinal care and spinal mobility and stretch muscles.

Apart from this exercise, the centre would also bring several treatments, including beauty salon, spa and aroma therapy, under a single roof from next week. Panchkarma (ayurvedic treatment) and yoga are already on.

Pilates, a conditioning routine that emphasises on building flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance, will also be available soon.
