Patna, Dec. 13: The high court today directed the state to conduct the Bihar Elementary Teachers’ Eligibility Test (BETET) according to the schedule.
The verdict came as a relief for lakhs of candidates whose fates were hanging in balance after one Nuzhat Iqbal and others sought direction to the government not to conduct BETET. A bench of Justice Ramesh Kumar Datta dismissed the petitions filed by Iqbal and others.
The state education department would conduct the BETET to recruit about 3 lakh teachers in the next three years in government schools to achieve the 1:40 teacher-student ratio according to the Right to Education Act.
Around 26 lakh students will appear for the test, scheduled on December 20 and 21, at centres across Bihar. Around 2.25 lakh candidates, whose applications were rejected for filing wrong forms, would get a chance to appear in the examination in January 2012.
