Patna: The Bihar School Examination Board on Tuesday constituted a committee to probe whether questions asked in the matriculation mathematics paper were "out of syllabus", a day after students went on rampage in Raxaul in East Champaran district, and Buxar complaining about the paper.
"The probe committee, having members from outside the school examination board, will go through the mathematics question paper and at the same time the Class X mathematics syllabus," said board chairman Anand Kishor.
"The committee will find out whether the paper had questions from outside the syllabus. Based on the committee's report, the board will take further action."
The three-member committee has been given a week's time to submit its report.
On Tuesday as well, many students who appeared in the matriculation examination in Patna complained that most of the questions that were asked in mathematics paper were out of syllabus.
"The mathematics paper held on Saturday was tough. Most of the questions that were asked in the paper were out of syllabus. Around 30 questions that were asked in objective section consisting of 50 questions were from outside syllabus," said Ajit Kumar, a student of Anugrah Narayan Sarvodaya High School, Gaurichak, whose exam centre is Miller High School.
Echoing the views of Ajit Kumar, his schoolmate Mukesh Kumar said: "This year the board introduced the objective section in matriculation so that students can get good scores. But most of the examinees such as myself failed to understand many questions as they were out of syllabus."
Sources said that though the board has constituted a committee to probe the matriculation paper, the board feels that there is a larger conspiracy behind the students' unrest.
A senior board official said under cover of anonymity: "Most of the questions that were asked in mathematics objective section were concept-based questions, but the questions were from syllabus - mostly from NCERT books."
Monday's protests were concentrated in two towns, Raxaul and Buxar.
There were no reports of student unrest or complaints over the matriculation exam on Tuesday.
