Kathmandu, April 30 (PTI): Nepal's first woman Chief Justice Sushila Karki was suspended today after an impeachment motion against her was registered in Parliament by two major ruling parties that accused her of "interfering" with the executive and issuing "prejudiced" verdicts.

Deputy Prime Minister Bimalendra Nidhi resigned expressing dissatisfaction at the motion brought by the ruling Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre).

Karki, 64, was automatically suspended from the post after the registration of the motion today. A total of 249 MPs from the two parties signed the motion - more than the one-fourth needed for the move.

Kamal Thapa, another of Nepal's deputy Prime Ministers, also expressed displeasure. In a tweet, Thapa, the chairman of the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, said the motion was unfortunate.

Karki, a BHU alumna, had assumed office on August 1 last year. Gopal Parajuli has been appointed acting chief justice.
