This promises to be the mother of all selfies that has you covered from all angles. Mother’s Wax Museum is offering 3D statues of visitors at its souvenir shop.

“We have been selling 150mm replicas of the wax statues in our collection for over a year now. For that also we were using the same technology with 3D printer,” said a Hidco official.

The idea of making 3D statues of visitors came to souvenir shop owner Tapas Debnath. “For reasons of economic viability, we are offering only headpieces now,” he said. The bill comes to Rs 2,000 for the 50mm pieces including delivery charges. This is why they are calling it a 3D selfie as in selfies too it is the face that is primarily clicked.

All one has to do is sit still on a chair as the shop attendant slowly walks around one with the portable 3D scanner in hand. Once the head is scanned across 360 degrees, one can actually see a three-dimensional statue in a single tone on the computer screen connected to the scanner. The process takes less than five minutes.

The printing happens layer by layer starting with the bottom using molten plastic, explained Amitrasudan Chowdhury, whose company Srijan Creation is manufacturing the 3D statues.

The products are couriered to the customer’s address within seven days.

“The 3D printing technology was very expensive till around 2012. We started in 2014 as a hobby and gradually realised its commercial potential. In Japan, it became very popular as figures atop birthday or wedding cakes,” said Chowdhury.

Though they have started with headpieces, they can also do full figures if there is a demand.
