Siliguri, July 15: Five years after the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, was passed, Siliguri is finally looking forward to a modern system of waste disposal.
The West Bengal Solid Waste Management Mission has selected Siliguri Municipal Corporation in north Bengal to implement a proper waste disposal system as specified under the 2000 rules.
?The Centre will provide the much-needed funds under the National Environment Policy,? said Prodipto Ghosh, the secretary of central forests and environment ministry.
The Mission has collaborated with Financial Institutions Reform and Expansion (FIRE) Project, a USAID-funded initiative. ?We will implement city-wide plans for storage, collection and transportation of waste,? Lee E. Becker, the chief of FIRE said.
Ghosh and Becker today attended a workshop on solid waste management organised by the Mission in association with the pollution control board, SMC and ministries of forests and municipal affairs.
