Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty on Friday night sent an “SOS” to governor Jagdeep Dhankar seeking security after he apprehended a threat to his life.

The request followed a protest by a section of students, teachers and family members of a school student whose body was found hand¬ing at a hostel on the campus on Thursday morning.

The governor on Friday night tweeted the message of the VC and informed chief secretary H.K. Dwivedi about it.

“VC Vishwa Bharati msg sent to CS for intervention @WBPolice “Kindly send se¬curity. My life is at risk. The agitators have broken the main gate and an untoward incident is likely to happen if you don’t send police protection for me. It is an SOS. Bidyut Chakrabarty,” read the tweet.

A large police team from Santiniketan has moved to the residence of the VC for his protection.

Sources said Chakrabarty had sought the help of central police from the governor, too. The VC could not be contacted for comment.

The family members of the Class XII student had started agitation in front of the VC’s residence with the body and dispersed around 8pm. They were demanding action against those responsible for his death.

The lock of the main gate of the VC’s residence was broken and the protesters tried to enter his home.
