April 28 - May 4 at Academy of Fine Arts, New South Gallery; 3 pm - 8 pm: Annual exhibition of paintings by members of Friends will be inaugurated today by artist Sudhir Moitra at 5.30 pm. Till May 5 at Chitrakoot Art Gallery; 3 pm - 8 pm: An exhibition of paintings by Anuswar. Till May 23 at Gallery Caps, 16 Jatin Bagchi Road, Calcutta 29; 11.30 am - 7.30 pm: An exhibition of the works of renowned artists. Till May 31 (except Sundays & holidays) at ING Vysya Bank Ltd, Sikkim House, 4/1 Middleton Street; 10 am - 6 pm; Sat. April 25 onwards at 408, Jodhpur Park: Urban Dream organises a four-week Western dance workshop to be conducted by Mayhem. Till May 7 at The University of Burdwan campus, Golapbag: A workshop on video journalism organised by the university in association with Ajker Chithi, Burdwan, and Ritwik Academy, Calcutta. April 28 at Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute campus, EM Bypass Road, P.O: Panchasayar: A workshop on ‘Animation Filmmaking’ by well-known French animation film director Michel Ocelot for animation enthusiasts. May 6 - 24 at 11F Palm Avenue, Calcutta 19; 5 pm - 6 pm: Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Arts is organising a workshop on impressions of diverse Western Dance Techniques. This includes Jazz, Afro-Caribbean, Graham, Horton and Release techniques. The workshop, to be conduced by Mitali Sinha, Paramita Chakraborty and Varshaa Bardhan, is open to dancers with at least two years’ experience in any dance form. Details at #247-5997.

recitation fest

Till April 28 at Paschim Banga Bangla Akademi; 5.30 pm: The first Bengali recitation festival, organised jointly by Pratham Alo and Abritti Parishad. Participants this evening include Kajal Chouwdhury, Shovan Sundar Basu, Krishnakali Basu, Satinath Mukhopadhyay, debesh Choudhury, Rokeya Roy and Partha Mukhopadhyay.

LECTURE

April 28 at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Shivananda Hall; 5.30 pm: R.K. Dasgupta will speak in English on Swami Vivekananda’s Religion — XI. April 28 at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Vivekananda Hall; 6.15 pm: Swami Puranananda will speak in Bengali on Adhyatma Ramayana. April 30 at the Ramakrishna Mission Saradapitha, Belur Math; 6 pm: Swami Gokuleshananda will speak in Bengali on Deva Vani.

Music

April 28 at Swabhumi; 6 pm: Baul songs by Sanjit Das. April 30 at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Tollygunge; 6 pm: Buddhadev Dasguptaa presents a sarod recital, with Samar Saha on the tabla.

IN MEMORIAM

April 28 at G.D. Birla Sabhagar; 6.15 pm: An evening of Tagore songs to commemorate the 75th birth anniversary of Rabindrasangeet exponent Nilima Sen. Participants include Mohan Singh, Alpana Roy, Pramita Mallick, Abhirup Guha Thakurta, Reeta Ghosh, Swastika Mukhopadhyay, Neelanjana Sen, Aniruddha Sinha, Indira Bandyopadhyay, Soma Roy and Tarasankar Das.

SPORT

Till May 18 at The Circle: Intra Club Spoirts Carnival for members, with badminton, table tennis, squash, swimming, snooker and pool events.

SIT-AND-DRAW MEET

May 2 at Raj Bhavan, North Gate; 9 am - 10.15 am: Concern India Foundation hosts a sit-and-draw competition for school children, to be followed by an award ceremony at 10.30 am.

EXHIBITION

Till April 30 at Birla Academy of Art & Culture; 4 pm - 8 pm: On the occasion of the French Season in India 2003, the Embassy of France in India, Alliance Francaise de Calcutta in collaboration with Les Amis de la France and the Birla Academy of Art & Culture present 50 Years of French Posters (1940 to 2000) in memory of eminent graphic designer Savignac. Till April 30 at Central Cottage Industries Emporium, Chowringhee; 10 am - 7 pm: Borders that Unite India — an exhibition-cum-sale of sarees and dress material from all over the country. The selections inclkude Tangail, Dhanekhali, Mangalgiri, Chanderi, Kalamkari, Kanchipuram, Bomkai and Tie ’n’ Die.
