Identity of Indian diaspora

The Telegraph Online Published 11.01.11, 12:00 AM
Identity of Indian diaspora
Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in collaboration with The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India, host The Coolie Odyssey, a play by Rajesh Gopie. An insightful production, it deals with the lives of Indian indentured workers, who worked on sugar plantations of Natal between 1860 and 1911. It begins with the arrival of three Indian immigrants in South Africa who decide to leave the grinding poverty and hopelessness of their native Calcutta, and reach Natal to work in sugar plantations. A moving theatrical piece, it marries touches of compassion with flashes of humour to reveal important insights into the identity of Indians in that country then and now, their significance and contributions, and the ongoing issues of race relations and nation building. Presented as a special event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Indians arriving in South Africa, the play was premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2002, before enjoying a highly successful season at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, will grace the occasion with his presence at this evening’s performance.
