Festival of Japanese dolls

The Telegraph Online Published 10.01.11, 12:00 AM
Festival of Japanese dolls
Besides the many fairs and festivals being hosted in the city this winter, comes the rare opportunity to witness Dolls of Japan, an exhibition of unique traditional Japanese dolls. Known as ningyo in Japan, which literally means ‘human shape’, there are various types of Japanese dolls, some representing babies and children, some the imperial court, warriors and heroes, fairytale characters, gods and (rarely) demons, and also common urban people. Many have a long tradition and are still made today for household shrines, as gifts, or for festival celebrations such as Hinamatsuri, the doll festival, or Kodomo no Hi or Children’s Day. The exhibition, which will display a spectacular collection of dolls of various forms such as Miyabi, Tsubaki and others in a typical Japanese ambience, will not only give a golden opportunity to the people of the city to enjoy and learn about Japanese artistic genius, but also contribute to further enhancing the friendly ties between the people of Japan and India. One of the most elegant travelling doll exhibitions of Japan, it is organised jointly by the Consulate-General of Japan in Calcutta and Japan Foundation in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Consul-General of Japan in Calcutta Mitsuo Kawaguchi will inaugurate the exhibition today at 4 pm.
