Jazzing up the evening
Mateusz Kolakowski is a young Polish pianist, proficient as a classical, jazz and contemporary musician. He is currently associated with the Music Academy of Katowice in Poland. He has participated twice at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. His concerts in several cities in the US and Czech Republic have been highly appreciated. He received the “Jazz Fryderyk” award from the Polish ministry of culture and the prestigious prize for “The Most Promising Pianist” at the Martial Solal Competition, France. This evening, in his solo piano improvisations, Kolakowski creates a unique combination of jazz and classical musical elements. Hosted by Rabindranath Tagore Centre, ICCR Calcutta in collaboration with the Embassy of Poland in India.

Till June 5 at Rabindra Sadan Prangan Mancha, 5.30pm: In celebration of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary, Rabindra Sadan, department of information & cultural affairs, Government of West Bengal has organised programmes of Tagore songs and recitation by distinguished artistes. Till June 5 at Rabindra Sadan; 6pm: Rabindra Sadan, under the I&CA department, Government of West Bengal, celebrates Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary with Tagore songs, recitation, drama and dance-drama by eminent artistes and well-known groups. Today: Jeebaner Dhrubatara (a song-based programme; Direction: Shukla Dasgupta) presented by Proyasi; Biraha Madhur (a song-based programme; Direction: Apala Basu) presented by Suroloke; Aamar Mukti Aaloy Aaloy (a dance-based programme; Direction: Priyadarshini Ghosh and Mohana Iyer) presented by Natyanova Performing Arts Centre; and Chandalika (to be performed in the North Bengal folk-dance style; Direction: Dr Saibal Basu) produced by Jalpaiguri Iman. PERFORMING ARTS

ENVIRONMENT

June 3 at Renu Chaya Mukta Mancha (open area in front of Academy of Fine Arts); 4.30pm - 6pm: Linc with Green — An interactive evening of plays and fun activities which will see a number of schools and NGOs such as St Thomas Girls School, Mahadevi Birla Girls High School, HIVE India and HOPE Foundation, among others, highlight the hazards of environmental degradation and the importance of environmental preservation through skits and dance performances. The evening will also see fun contests for the audience in the form of quizzes and slogan-writing contests.
