Emergence of a new India

The Telegraph Online Published 03.03.11, 12:00 AM
Emergence of a new India
India is one of the world’s oldest continuous civilisations; its various communities live in several centuries simultaneously, creating multiple and opposing narratives. In fact, the earlier version of a poor and spiritual country has now given way to that of a rich and materialistic one. But, a closer and more intimate exploration will sadly reveal the tawdry, the cruel, the melancholic side of life in India which is recently finding expression in popular cinema and in the visual fine arts. The three artists in Concepts & Ideas 2011 do not exactly plunge us into this universe. Instead, they make us do what good art is supposed to do — interpret, reveal and make us witnesses. Each of them sensitively examines a silent issue plaguing life and living in India. Sheba Chhachhi looks at the human effects and affect of rapid urbanisation and the relationship between myth and ecology. In her works, aesthetics goes together with advocating justice and equity and critiquing contemporary society. Anjum Singh’s sculptures express her perspectives on urban, metropolitan issues, the chaos, the garbage, the shattering disfigurement of a city, while continuing to be alluring for the consumer society. Praneet Soi engages with the questions of migration and displacements. He examines parallels that link his practice as a painter to a political approach to the subject matter.
