Works of five extremely talented artists from Navi Mumbai are currently on display at the ongoing show, Punch Sena: Art from Navi Mumbai. Through their creations they interpret life in modern times. Their powerful imageries erase all physical boundaries and become global in expression — in the angst and helplessness expressed through their subjects. In an age dominated by faux conceptual art, the idealism of the quintet might seem quaintly utopian or even old fashioned; but it is this that allows them to react to the realities of the big city. Navi Mumbai, their current habitat, represents for them the materialist hysteria that has engulfed contemporary urban society, cutting across all social and economic strata. The variety of their works just scratches the surface of a vastly diverse nationscape of creative talent. Tushar Potdar’s beleaguered loner depicts how he or, perhaps, how we all feel within a pressured city. Santosh More (one of his works appears above) reconstructs frighteningly bereft cities — imagery we imagine flashing on digital screens in a lost spaceship. Pandit Bhila Khairnar’s contemplative and meditative paintings probably suggest a cure for what ails the urbanite. On the other hand, Sanjeev Sonpimpare is stirred by the lot of the frustrated, cheated and depressed farmers who find suicide as their sole path to redemption from debts. Roul Hemanta empathises with the migrant worker and depicts how deprivation is intertwined with his very existence.
