A battalion of the Third Gorkha Rifles, popularly known as Thud Thud, celebrated its 67th Raising Day on October 1 in Binnaguri. The battalion was raised during World War I but demobilised in 1920. It was, however, raised again during World War II.
The battalion had participated in several army operations in Palestine, Sinai, Malay and Myanmar. It was awarded the Theatre Honour Kargil during Operation Vijay for capturing five posts and nabbing one prisoner of war.
Lt Gen Amar Nath Aul, the chief of staff, Western Command, many retired and serving officers, JCOs and other ranks were present at the programme and complimented the battalion.
Nurses’ Day
The Military Nursing Service (MNS) celebrated its 82nd Raising Day on October 1 at 158 Base Hospital in Bengdubi. The MNS in India had started working in March 1883 when the first batch of British trained army nurses arrived for the service troops.
In 1896, the service was designated as the Indian Army Nursing Service (IANS). In 1903, IANS was renamed Queen Alexander’s Military Nursing Service for India — which returned to the UK after the Independence. The Indian MNS officers filled the posts that fell vacant.
To celebrate the day, a gathering was organised at the Bengdubi Service Officers Institute. Lt Gen. Deepak Raj, the GOC of the Trishakti Corps, was present along with officers of various army and air force units and their families.
EME Corps fest
The EME Corps celebrated the 64th Raising Day on Sunday. A sainik sammelan, oath taking ceremony and welfare activities were held. The GOC of the Trishakti Corps congratulated all personnel on the occasion.
Id celebration
The Bombay Sappers and other troops of the Trishakti Corps observed Id-Ul-Fitr on Sunday. Namaz was offered at Sukna, Binnaguri and different areas in Sikkim.
