The state government will bring a bill to rename the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

The bill will be passed in the ongoing Assembly session, a higher education department official said.

The bill says the new name of the 15-year-old university, to which over 200 private and some government-controlled engineering colleges are affiliated, will be Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology.

'The university is being renamed to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Azad. It will be a fitting tribute to the freedom fighter and the country's first education minister,' the higher education department official said.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had posted on Facebook her government's plans to rename WBUT as Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad University of Technology on November 11 last year on the 125th birth anniversary of Azad.

Several students who have already passed out and got engineering degrees from WBUT had come down on the chief minister soon after reading her announcement on Facebook.
