Howrah: A group of teenagers has been knocking on each and every door in their housing society to raise funds for the Kerala flood victims.
The result: Rs 90,000 and counting.
The four college students and three school-goers, who have been raising money at Shree Shyam Gardens on Hardutt Rai Chamaria Road, near Howrah AC Market, have decided to donate their collection to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.
"We've visited around 30 homes. The minimum we have got is Rs 500 and the maximum Rs 1,1000. Around 10 more apartments are left," said Anshu Jain, a first-year student at the Heritage Institute of Technology.
Anshu is joined by Shreyas Dhanuka, Aditya Mundhra, Bharat Saraogi, Mihir Jain, Bhavika Jain and Arihant Jain.
For three days the group of seven has been visiting apartments from 8pm to 10pm, narrating the plight of flood victims in Kerala to the residents and seeking money for relief efforts.
"We have not come across a single person unwilling to help," said Anshu.
The idea germinated after Anshu asked her father whether she could send some money through Paytm to a relief fund. "My father suggested we tap our neighbours, who could be willing to contribute, too. So some of us got together and launched this drive," Anshu said.
"Two others - Jayant and Chahak, both school students - said they wanted to join us to raise funds. We are glad that we could motivate our juniors," said Shreyas, a first-year student at St Xavier's College.
