Siliguri, Nov. 10: Children here can soon spend a day flying down a roller-coaster or taking a short chug on a monorail.

Work is on full swing to set up a smaller version of Nicco Park, Calcutta’s popular amusement park, at Dagapur, 5 km from the heart of the town.

Spread over nine acres, the park will have several rides, like a roller coaster, a paratrooper, breakdance and striking cars to name a few. Those “weak at heart” will also have their share of fun on monorails and toy trains. The park will also boast of a “go-carting” facility, a feature that Nicco Park does not have.

“Some of the equipment for the rides have already arrived from suppliers in Goa and Mumbai,” said A.K. Sengupta, the general manager (projects) of the venture. “We will increase the workforce and hope to get the park ready by April next year.”

To be called Savin Kingdom, the amusement park is being promoted by Calcutta-based Savin World Resorts Pvt. Ltd, backed by the Saharia Group, on a proposal floated by the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA). The land has been given on lease through tender by the SJDA, which has also constructed the boundary walls and some pathways.

A multi-activity hall will also be constructed in the first phase, where entertainment programmes, exhibitions and get-togethers can be held. “The top floor of the building will have a food court, where all sorts of cuisine will be available,” said Sengupta who had led the project team for Nicco Park during its construction.

“After the first phase of the multi-activity park is opened, we shall focus on Central Plaza, a 17,000 sq.-ft area which will house a four-screen multiplex,” Sengupta said, while giving details to The Telegraph. “Up to 1,000 persons can watch movies at one time.”

Special 3-D simulation rides, like those at Science City in Calcutta, will also be installed. “Going down a coal mine or a ride in space will be simulated in this exciting feature,” he said.

Musical bands — both local and those from Calcutta — will play off and on at the open-air theatre at the park. Ballets, dramas, jatras and the like will also be held.

A third phase is also proposed, where a water park is likely to come up on three acres on the north side of the park. “It will be developed on the lines of Aquatica in Calcutta and will include wave pools, water chutes and even a “sea beach”, provided the plan comes through.”

The landscaping will apparently be very attractive. “The park consultants, Pune-based Fourth Dimension, are fairly experienced in this field.” The power for all this will be supplied through a 500-KVA captive power plant, for which a substation will be set up. The main supply will be from the state electricity board.
