A second-year student of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has been missing since Saturday afternoon, two days before the fourth semester exams were to start.

Avijit Singh was last seen in the hostel on Indra Biswas Road, a five-minute walk from the college campus, around 12.30pm. His two cell phones and wallet have been found in his room.

Singh's classmates realised he was not around when he failed to turn up for dinner around 9pm.

"We searched every corner of the hostel building. We went to the campus looking for him.... When all our efforts drew a blank, we alerted the principal," Subodh Shankar Behra, one of Singh's classmates, said.

His parents arrived in the city from Bihar's Muzaffarpur on Sunday.

A missing diary has been lodged with Tallah police station. Till late on Sunday his parents did not receive any ransom call, police said.

Sayan Banerjee, another classmate who stays in the same hostel, said Singh was in a T-shirt and shorts when he last met him in the hostel. "Singh left saying he would return shortly. We didn't find anything suspicious."

Banerjee described Singh as a jovial person who loved to talk with everyone in the hostel. "I don't know whether he had any affair with anyone.... He never appeared upset with the semester preparations. He had ranked within 3,000 in the all-India joint entrance examination."

College principal Sudhhadhan Batabyal said Singh was good in his studies and was doing well. "I never received any complaint against him," he said. "We are completely in the dark about the reason behind his disappearance."

Singh's distant relative and local guardian, Amit Gunjan, who lives in Salt Lake lodged the missing diary, an officer of Tallah police station said. "All police stations and the government railway police have been alerted," he said.

Gunjan said he never heard anything wrong about Singh. "He would call me up occasionally. Everything seemed alright."

Another officer said: "We have sought Singh's call details from the service providers. We hope some lead will emerge soon."
