Deshapriya Park: A restaurant on the ground floor of Priya Cinema, that had caught fire on Sunday, and three fast food outlets on the same floor started serving on Thursday, allegedly in violation of a fire services directorate order.

Burnt Garlic, a restaurant on the ground floor, was open to diners when Metro went there on Thursday evening. Tea Junction, Street Café and Roasted Grill were open too.

The Wow Momo outlet, however, remained closed. The door leading to Vault, a bar-cum-restaurant on the basement, was also shut.

Jag Mohan, the director general of fire services, said the shops had been asked not to open till necessary fire safety measures were installed in keeping with the fire services directorate's recommendations.

"They can open only after the fire services directorate is satisfied that necessary safety arrangements are in place. They should not have opened today," Jag Mohan said.

A fire broke out at Priya Cinema in the middle of the night show of Fanney Khan on Sunday. About 60 people were safely evacuated from the theatre and the two restaurants on the ground floor and basement, along with the owners' family that occupies the upper floors of the building.

Arijit Dutta, who owns Priya Entertainments Pvt Ltd, could not be contacted on Thursday.

The 59-year-old theatre was on Monday asked to remain shut till further orders.

The fire services on Thursday issued its recommendations for fire safety measures in the 700-seater cinema as well as the eateries in the five-storey building on Rashbehari Avenue.

The restaurants have been asked to install heat detectors while installation of beam detectors - sensitive gadgets that go off even in the event of little smoke - has been recommended for the auditorium, sources told Metro.

Sagar Daryani, the owner of the Wow Momo chain, said the outlet wasn't opened in the absence of clarity on steps that need to be taken.

Employees of two food outlets facing the pavement said the shops were opened and cleaned on Wednesday. "We started serving customers from Thursday," said one.

The fire brigade will inspect the building on Friday. "We will ask the shops to remain shut till adequate safety measures are in place. If they do not comply, we will lodge police complaints," said the officer.
